Studio

Established in 2010 WATGUNLOW Architects Ltd is located in a delightful studio on Jervois Road in Ponsonby.

An amalgamation of the talents and skills of directors Hamish Gunns and Kit Lowe. We have a great team of devoted and passionate designers committed to delivering intelligently conceived and well executed projects.

Design Philosophy

We are people focussed. We thrive on the fact that our clients bring us the greatest diversity of goals and most interesting aspirations. We love to learn and each new challenge brings us a deeper understanding of people’s relationship to architecture.

That’s why we bring all of our experience to every project but we leave our egos and previous projects at home. This is about you.

Hamish has over 20 years of local and international design experience at large and small scales. He is at home with broad fundamentals and small details alike.

Hamish is known for his unflagging sense of humour and the energy he brings to every relationship.

Hamish believes the design process is enhanced by open and constructive collaboration. He strives always to reflect his client’s culture, lifestyle and personality in their project.

Our brief was a simple but architectural home that coped with our budget and the constraints of the site. And there were a lot of constraints: a steep section with difficult geotech, a limited footprint, aggressive access, complicated services, very close neighbours, and the house was to be built in a factory in three pieces suitable for a truck, a ferry, then a crane!

The result is a masterclass in thoughtful design. The constraints become highlights and the design reflected what we wanted and disappeared the issues we thought we faced. Hamish was a pleasure to deal with throughout, letting us see what might be possible, while providing counsel on what could be left. But he still delivered design details and surprises that elevate the house and the experience of living in it. We’re delighted with the home and can honestly say it’s better than we ever thought it could be.
